VOCABULARY

Students learn a set of vocabulary words every week. They practice using the vocabulary words in a variety of exercises for homework and in class. Reviewing and testing of the words are done at least three time for multiple exposure ensuring true understanding of the words. The students are encouraged to apply the words in sentence writing, essay writing, and presentations.

SUMMIT의 VOCABULARY수업은 학생들이 매주 한 세트의 새로운 단어를 학습하는 것으로 이루어집니다. 새롭게 배운 단어들은 수업시간을 통하여 충분한 단어 사용 연습을 해 볼 수 있는 기회를 가지게 됩니다. 이와 더불어 리뷰 시간과 테스트를 통하여 학생들이 단어 사용에 대하여 더욱 정확한 이해를 할 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다. 또한 학생들이 배운 단어들을 실제로 자신의 글쓰기나 프레젠테이션에 직접 사용해 보는 것을 통하여 정확한 단어사용과 더욱 풍부한 표현을 할 수 있도록 지도합니다.

READING

Novel    This course is designed to teach students to recognize key literary elements of the story. Lower level students learn about: setting, character, plot, point of view, theme, conflict, and author’s style. Upper level students build upon the essential elements and study the text on deeper levels through literary devices such as metaphor, imagery, allegory, personification, and more. We provide students with keys to unlock the author’s message, allowing students to not only gain literary and scholarly knowledge but a sense of joy as well.

SUMMIT의 READING 수업에는 Novel 과정이 있습니다. 이 과정을 통해 학생들이 소설을 이해하는데 필수 문학적 요소들을 파악할 수 있도록 하고 있습니다. 저학년 학생들은 ‘소설의 배경, 등장인물, 줄거리, 작가시점, 주제, 갈등, 작가의 문체’ 등 문학 작품을 잘 이해하기 위한 기본적인 사항들에 대하여 학습하게 됩니다. 고학년 학생들은 수준 높고 난이도가 있는 작품을 이해하기 위하여 ‘은유, 비유, 풍유, 의인화’ 등의 문학적 장치들에 대한 학습을 포함한 더욱 깊이 있는 수업이 진행됩니다. 결국은 소설 수업을 통하여 단순히 문학적이고 학문적인 지식과 정보를 얻는 것에 그치지 않고 학생들이 소설 속에 숨겨진 작가의 메시지를 찾아내도록 하여 더 큰 만족과 흥미를 느낄 수 있도록 지도합니다.

Reading Strategies    Through non-fiction and exposure to short stories of various genre, students are taught close reading skills to analyze, criticize, and interpret the information. This course focuses on reading strategies and teaches students to recognize questions involving inference, reference, contextual clues, text-evidence, and more.

SUMMIT의 READING 수업에는 Reading Strategies 과정이 있습니다. 논픽션과 다양한 장르의 단편 소설을 공부하는 이 과정을 통하여 학생들은 글 속에서 정보를 분석하고 비평하며 해석하는 방법을 배우게 됩니다. 이 과정은 글 읽기에는 전략이 중요하다는 것을 학생들이 인식하게 하는 것에 교육이 집중되어 있으며 학생들이 문장과 문맥 속에서 단서를 찾아내고 추론하며 결론에 대한 복선을 파악하는 능력을 키울 수 있도록 지도합니다.

GRAMMAR

We have a practical approach to grammar. During the year, students are taught grammatical terminology and concept, how to self-correct their mistakes, overcome fossilized grammatical errors, and apply grammar rules to their writing.

SUMMIT의 GRAMMAR 수업은 실용적인 문법 학습에 집중하여 교육을 제공하고 있습니다. 1년 과정에 걸쳐 학생들은 학년별로 필수적으로 알아야 하는 문법적 개념과 용어를 학습하게 되며 복습을 위한 문제 풀이에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 자신이 틀린 실수를 어떻게 고쳐가는지 까지 연습하고 훈련하게 됩니다. 습관화된 문법적 실수들을 극복하여 SUMMIT학생 개개인은 보다 정확도 높은 글쓰기를 할 수 있도록 지도합니다.

SCIENCE

The science courses equip students to handle future real-world problems by familiarizing themselves with non-fiction books containing scientific research language. They are taught to visualize difficult concepts, think methodically, and investigate problems and solutions.

SUMMIT의 SCIENCE수업은 과학 학술 용어를 포함한 논픽션 서적들에 대하여 학생들이 친숙해질 수 있도록 지도하여 학생들이 미래에 마주하게 되는 실질적인 문제들을 어렵지 않게 해결할 수 있도록 준비 시킵니다. 학생들은 과학 수업 과정을 통하여 난해한 개념을 시각화 하여 이해하는 법을 배우게 되고 체계적인 사고와 문제와 해법을 탐구하는 법까지 배우게 됩니다.

WRITING

Through our writing program, students are expected to develop and perfect their skills through several revisions. We have a multiple-draft approach to mirror professionals refining their craft. We recommend this particular approach to help second-language learners focus on grammar and content separately. Writing is first guided by teachers through brainstorming and helping students organize their ideas. Then, students are expected to apply their new writing knowledge to independent writing. As a result, students learn to produce clear and dynamic but concise writing.

SUMMIT의 WRITING 수업은 학생들이 자신의 글을 여러 번의 수정 작업을 거치면서 완벽한 글로 다듬어 가는 과정을 배우게 되고 그러한 과정을 통해 글쓰기 능력을 향상 시킬 수 있도록 구성하고 있습니다. 반복적인 수정된 글쓰기 연습과정을 통해 좀 더 정제되고 다듬어진 글을 쓸 수 있습니다. 그리하여 학생들은 간결하지만 명확하고 살아있는 글을 쓸 수 있는 능력을 배우게 됩니다.

LISTENING-NOTETAKING

To prepare students for their future academic careers and then beyond in life, we teach simultaneous listening and notetaking. Students learn to catch important information and effectively record it. Students listen to appropriately selected media sources by our teachers. They comprehend academically challenging and formal language from presentations and lectures while also developing shorthand techniques for organizing their notes.

SUMMIT 에서는 학생들이 미래의 더 높은 수준의 공부와 사회 생활속의 경력을 위하여 충분한 듣기와 노트에 핵심 내용을 기록하는 훈련을 동시에 집중적으로 훈련 시킵니다. 교사의 지도 아래 학생들은 본인의 수준에 맞는 미디어 자료를 통해 듣기 연습을 할 것이며 중요한 정보를 구분해 내고 미래의 정확한 기억과 이해를 위한 효과적인 노트 메모법을 배우게 됩니다. 학생들은 이러한 과정속에 보다 학문적 도전과 격조 있는 언어구사에 대한 이해도 역시 발전 될 것입니다.

SPEAKING-PRESENTATION

Regular speaking opportunities are given to students through culminating projects. This output skill allows students to gain confidence with their speaking and presentation abilities as they present a piece of work produced themselves. Verbal and non-verbal communication are taught to be done effectively.

SUMMIT에서는 학생들이 프로젝트가 끝날 때 SPEECH의 기회를 가질 수 있도록 합니다. 학생 스스로가 창조해낸 작품이나 내용을 바탕으로 SPEECH를 하는 기회를 가지는 이 프로그램은 학생들이 자신의 말하기와 발표 실력에 대한 확신감을 더욱 고취 시킬 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다. 또한 이 과정에서는 언어적인 부분에만 머물지 않고 非언어적인 부분과 방법의 효용성에 까지 지도하게 됩니다.
